What is Android?

It is a Mobile Operating System (OS) built on a modified version of Linux Kernel and other open-source software. It was launched on 23rd September 2008 and can be written in Java, C, C++, XML, Assemble Language, Python, Shell Script, GO, Make, and D. It is basically designed for touchscreen Smartphones and Tablets.

Fact 1- Android was Never a Google’s Idea

Android was eventually developed by Android Inc. which was established in October 2003. The founders of the Company Andy Rubin, Rich Miner, Chris White, and Nick Sears had one main objective behind creating Android and it was that it should be aware of its users’ wants. The first Android Operating System was developed by Android with the help of Google in 2004. Google finally purchased it in 2005 for $50million and hired Andy Rubin to head the Android.

Fact 2- First Android Smartphone was HTC Dream and T mobile G-1

HTC and T mobile G-1 was the first-ever smartphones to run Android Operating System on its device. In 2008, this device was officially launched in the United States and United Kingdoms and after that, it was launched in another European country.

Fact 3- Android 3.0 (HoneyComb) version never ran on the phone

Android 3.0 was designed specifically for larger screen sizes like that of the tablets. In February 2011, it was launched with Motorola Xoom. Moreover, Google did not release the source code for this version which means you cannot find the source code for this particular version online. The reason behind it was that Google did not want developers to copy the code and design it for a smartphone.

Fact 4- Versions’ names are based on the Sweet Treats and Desserts

Google released a number of Android versions and all of them were the names of either Sweet treats or Desserts. That too in alphabetical order. Android version 1.5 (Cupcake) was the first version and now Android 9.0 (Pie) is the latest one. See it for yourself-

Donut – Android 1.6

Eclair – Android 2.0

Froyo – Android 2.2

Gingerbread – Android 2.3

Honeycomb – Android 3.0

Fact 5- Android’s Logo was inspired by Bathroom Sign

Designer Irina Blok was part of the launch campaign and she was the one to design Android’s Green Robot Logo. Funny and interestingly, her inspiration came from the bathroom doors. The male robot is the main logo and the female-looking robot is the Gynoid.

 

Fact 6- Chinese Share of the Android Market is 77%

China is indeed one of the most unique Android smartphone markets in the world. According to Forbes, Chinese smartphones make up 77% of the Android Market.
